Omnipod 5 support and a fix for 203 errors are now in the main branches of both Loop and Trio!

This work was only possible through the amazing work of our open-source community of developers supported by the Nightscout Foundation — a nonprofit focused on empowering development to improve the lives of those with Type 1 diabetes. As devices change and products come to their end of life, your support can help make effective systems for Type 1 diabetes available to everyone regardless of what devices they use.

Before you begin

While Omnipod 5 support has been thoroughly tested, it is still possible that something might not work when you first switch to the Omnipod 5 Pod type. Do not fill the Omnipod 5 Pod until you reach the “Pair O5 Pod” screen that tells you to fill it. When that happens, it means your installed code should work with Omnipod 5 Pods. Be sure to have a backup DASH or Eros Pod on hand in case the transition is not successful.

Key terms

OS-AID — open-source automated insulin delivery system. Trio and Loop are OS-AID apps for iPhones, while AndroidAPS is for Android phones.

Browser Build — a way to build and keep Loop or Trio updated using GitHub Actions in a web browser, without needing a Mac.

Omnipod 5 — the newest generation of Pods, after DASH. They have Bluetooth built in, so no link device is required with OS-AID. When used with the official Insulet system they can connect directly to a CGM, but with OS-AID your phone runs the app and must stay nearby.

Omnipod DASH — the generation of Pods after Eros. They have Bluetooth built in, so no link device is required with OS-AID.

Omnipod Eros — the older generation of Pods, before DASH. They use radio-frequency comms, so they require a link device (RileyLink, OrangeLink, etc.) with OS-AID.

Technical & compatibility questions

Can I update my Loop or Trio app right now to be able to switch to Omnipod 5 Pods?

If you are affected by the Atlas Pods—either frequent 203 errors, or you have an iPhone 16 (all models) or 17e—switching to Omnipod 5 will resolve these issues.

In closed beta testing with over 100 pods, less than 5% of Omnipod 5 Pods experienced an error or fault. (The pods that experienced faults were primarily pods past their expiration date which stopped due to battery depletion.)

If you are a DASH user not affected by Atlas pod issues or 203 errors, there is no reason to urgently switch to Omnipod 5.

I have an iPhone 16 or 17e. Will Omnipod 5 Pods work for me with Loop or Trio?

Yes, with no reported issues. The issues you are aware of relate to DASH Pods with the Atlas boards inside. In our testing thus far, Omnipod 5 has not been susceptible to this issue.

Which iPhones and iOS versions have you tested Omnipod 5 Pods with?

We have specifically tested with iPhone 17 Pro, 17 Air, 16 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 13, iPhone SE 2nd generation, and iPhone SE 3rd generation on iOS 18 and iOS 26.

My phone and iOS combination isn’t on that list. What should I do?

We have thoroughly tested the most common iPhones during Beta testing. Robust testing on an iPhone 16 and a 17e indicated that Omnipod 5 Pods are NOT affected by the connection issues present on DASH Pods. We do not expect other iPhone models to have issues, as long as they are able to support at least iOS 18.

What about those 203 errors with Atlas DASH Pods?

There are no reported issues with in-date, unexpired Omnipod 5 Pods. (The issues you are aware of relate to DASH Pods with the Atlas boards inside.) Note that because they are a different device generation, Omnipod 5 Pods are NOT labeled with “SAW” or “ATLAS” like DASH Pods, and in testing, Omnipod 5 Pods did NOT experience 203 errors.

Are there any other issues I should be aware of?

In testing, faults were more likely with expired Omnipod 5 Pods that were manufactured in 2022 and 2023 than with in-date, unexpired Pods. If your Omnipod 5 Pods are expired, we recommend you request a new order of Omnipod 5 Pods from your pharmacy or HCP before commencing use with Loop or Trio.

I am using DASH Pods with my OS-AID system and not having any problems. Do I have to change to Omnipod 5 Pods?

Not urgently. If you are not having any problems, that is great. However, you are likely to receive the newer Atlas Pods at some point in the near future, because RBV/SAW Pod production will stop once Insulet runs out of SAW Bluetooth chips. To avoid having problems with 203 errors, you should still update your app to start using the Universal Omnipod Pump manager (OmnipodKit).

I have an Android phone. Can I put Loop or Trio on it and use Omnipod 5 Pods that way?

No. Loop and Trio are for iOS (iPhone) only. You can get an iPhone and use Loop or Trio, or stick with your current system until the AndroidAPS developers get AndroidAPS working with Omnipod 5 Pods. Keep up to date on their progress by monitoring the AAPS Users Facebook group or the WeAreNotWaiting Discord server.

An Omnipod 5 Pod has a direct connection with the CGM sensor. Does this also happen with OS-AID, so I could loop without my phone nearby?

No. You need your phone nearby at all times. Your phone is running the OS-AID application, just as it would with a DASH Pod or another type of pump.

Do I have to wear my Pod on the same side of my body as my CGM, or within line of sight, if I use Omnipod 5 Pods with Loop/Trio?

No. Your Omnipod 5 Pod and CGM can be on any body parts you usually use for your pump and CGM, as long as your phone is nearby.

My friend who has the Omnipod 5 system says they don’t need to carry their Controller or phone all the time because the CGM and Pod have a direct connection, so isn’t your answer above wrong?

No, if you want the direct Pod-sensor connection, that is available with the Omnipod 5 app and the official Insulet hybrid closed-loop system only, but it is not possible with OS-AID. However, OS-AID grants you freedom of sensor choice—for example, you could loop with an Eversense 365 CGM and still use Omnipod 5 Pods as your insulin pump.

Can I just run an OS-AID app complication on my Apple Watch and loop that way, without my phone nearby?

No. You need your phone nearby at all times. Your phone is running the OS-AID application, not the watch.

I have some Omnipod 5 Pods left over from trying it. Can I use them with my OS-AID app?

If the Pods have not expired, you can get the updated OS-AID code and it should work fine with them. In testing, faults were more likely with expired Omnipod 5 Pods that were manufactured in 2022 and 2023 than with in-date, unexpired Pods. If your Omnipod 5 Pods are expired, we recommend you request a new order of Omnipod 5 Pods from your pharmacy or HCP.

Does it matter which sensor the Omnipod 5 box says the Pods will work with? For example, the Omnipod 5 Pods say Libre 2 Plus on the box, but I have Dexcom G7.

The answer to this question has two parts:

With OS-AID, it does not matter which sensor is named on the outside of the Pod box. You need your phone nearby at all times for your CGM values to go into your OS-AID app.

However, in case you ever need to switch away from OS-AID and use the built-in Omnipod 5 algorithm, it could be a good idea to request a prescription from your doctor for the Pod type that supports the CGM you currently use. For example, if your Omnipod 5 Pods say “Libre 2+” and you use Dexcom G7 as your CGM, you would not be able to use the Omnipod 5 Automated Mode if you had to switch off OS-AID and use an official Omnipod 5 app or controller. You would be able to use Manual Mode only.

Does it matter which country I get Omnipod 5 Pods from? For example, if I live in the US, will Omnipod 5 Pods from Europe work with my OS-AID app?

It doesn’t matter which country the Pods are from. There is no geofencing issue with Pods (the same is true for Eros and DASH Pods).

Further information: CGM systems have more restrictions than Pods. Libre 2 Plus sensors have regional app locking. With Dexcom G7, your first sensor session must start inside the country of the App Store you downloaded the phone app from (or you can follow these instructions: G7 geofence instructions at Loop and Learn).

Will my data go into Glooko if I use Omnipod 5 Pods with OS-AID?

No. You will still need to use Nightscout and/or Tidepool. When used with OS-AID, Omnipod 5 Pods will work just like DASH Pods—only better, because there are no phone compatibility issues or 203 errors.

Does this announcement mean Loop or Trio can now be used with the Sequel twiist pump or Tandem Mobi?

No. This announcement is strictly about Omnipod 5 Pods ONLY.

Does this announcement mean OS-AID will support Omnipod 6 when it is released?

It is too early to say. Omnipod 6 has not been released yet, so we cannot determine whether Omnipod 6 Pods will work with OS-AID.

Getting access to Omnipod 5 pods

Do I need to have the Omnipod 5 Controller or iPhone app (iPhone app is US-only) in order to use Omnipod 5 Pods with Loop or Trio?

The answer to this question has three parts.

Technically, no.

However, your healthcare team, health insurance or funding entity may insist that you have a proper ‘start’ on Omnipod 5. This may mean you are required to obtain the Controller. Costs and funding for the Omnipod 5 system will depend on your local country situation. Open-source AID developers cannot advise on this topic.

Even if you don’t have to get an Omnipod 5 Controller to get Omnipod 5 Pods, having an Omnipod 5 Controller registered with Insulet (or the distributor, if your country has one) is a good idea, so you will be notified if there’s ever a recall (as happened in mid-2026). Having a registered account may make it simpler to get replacements for faulty Omnipod 5 Pods. So get a Controller if you can, register it, and you’ll be able to quote the serial number if you need to request replacement Pods.

My friend who used to use Omnipod 5 says I can have their old Omnipod 5 Controller in order to prove I have a Controller and mention that serial number to order Omnipod 5 Pods. This will work, right?

This could work, but you and the person gifting you the Controller will need to complete some administrative steps. Insulet and official distributors of the Omnipod 5 system keep track of the personal name of the user associated with a serial number. Ask the person whose name is on the account to contact Insulet or the distributor to start the process of de-registering the Controller.

I was able to order Omnipod 5 Pods from a third-party distributor and they didn’t ask for the Controller serial number, so isn’t your answer above wrong?

No. The answer above refers to Insulet and official distributors of the Omnipod 5 system. A third-party distributor for Pods can sell to whoever they want. You’re fortunate this is an option in your country. In some countries, Insulet or the official Omnipod 5 system distributor keeps a database of who is allowed to order what, so your personal experience is not necessarily relevant across different countries.

My doctor says that if I want to get Omnipod 5 Pods I have to go for training on Omnipod 5. This sounds like a waste of time because I’m going to use the Pods with OS-AID anyway. Can I just tell the rep I don’t need the training and skip it?

Probably not. In most cases you will simply need to complete the training as required. Regardless, it may be helpful for you to understand how the Omnipod 5 system works, in case you ever need to temporarily switch off of OS-AID.

Further info: if you tell an Insulet rep you’re using the Omnipod 5 Pods for open-source looping, they may decline to sign off on your training, which will mean you can’t order the Pods.

I have to do the Omnipod 5 training. What should I do with the Controller afterwards?

You should keep the Omnipod 5 Controller and user guide with your other spare diabetes supplies, because if your phone ever becomes unusable, you can at least use the Omnipod 5 Pods in Manual Mode (or even Automated Mode) until your OS-AID setup is back online. You may also need to quote the serial number of the Controller in order to get replacement Pods if you have any failures, etc.

For current Loop and Trio users

I use Browser Build. Can I update my Loop or Trio app right now to be able to switch to Omnipod 5 Pods? (How do I do that before the 3-month expiry?)

Update your app using Browser Build.

At the bottom of the Omnipod UI there’s a row that says “Switch to another pod or pump type.” Tap it and choose “Switch pod type.” Choose Omnipod 5 and continue. I use Xcode build. How do I update my Loop or Trio app to be able to use Omnipod 5 Pods?

Build the latest version of your app.

If you’re changing from Xcode to Browser Build, you will need to start a new pod with the app built using Browser Build.

Do I need to change anything on my Nightscout site if I’m changing Pod types?

If you’re an existing Loop or Trio user moving from Eros or DASH Pods and staying on the same app, no.

Can I continue to use the same insulin type I use with DASH Pods if I change to Omnipod 5 Pods?

Yes. When you change pod types and select Omnipod 5, all your configuration from your current pod type is maintained: the same insulin type, notifications, confidence reminders, and Silent pod status.

How did support for Omnipod 5 happen? What can I do to help?

Loop and Trio are projects built and maintained entirely by volunteers, and they will always be free to use. The Omnipod 5 driver alone in OmnipodKit represents years of volunteer work by open-source developers, supported through the Nightscout Foundation. How does Omnipod 5 support in Loop and Trio affect Android users or AndroidAPS?

Loop and Trio are for iOS (iPhone) only. If you are very keen to use Omnipod 5 pods, you can get an iPhone and switch to Loop or Trio.

While we don't have anything to announce today, there is work being done on supporting Omnipod 5 in AndroidAPS - it is just not ready and doesn't currently have an ETA.

You can keep up to date on development progress by monitoring the AAPS Users Facebook group or the WeAreNotWaiting Discord server. Tentatively, the AndroidAPS developers hope to support Omnipod 5 by the end of 2026; however, there is still much additional work needed.

I want to use Omnipod 5 Pods because my health insurance is making it difficult to get DASH Pods. What should I do first?

Check the general FAQs above. You’ll need to speak with your healthcare team to get your prescription changed. Then you’ll need to get an iPhone and get onto Loop or Trio.

I use AndroidAPS. Can I put Loop or Trio on my Android phone and use Omnipod 5 Pods that way?

No. To keep many of the algorithm features you’re used to, you can get an iPhone and change to Loop or Trio, or stick with your current system until the AndroidAPS developers get AndroidAPS working with Omnipod 5 Pods. Keep up to date on their progress by monitoring the AAPS Users Facebook group or the WeAreNotWaiting Discord server. Tentatively, the AndroidAPS developers hope to support Omnipod 5 by the end of 2026; however, there is still much additional work needed.

Can I pay someone to build Loop or Trio for me? It sounds complicated.
